AbstractThe effects of pressurised air on the erosion of wet soils have been investigated to facilitate designing air cushion vehicles (ACV) for wetland paddy fields. Experiments were conducted with laboratory apparatus which simulates conditions under the ACV. Tests were carried out on three different soil conditions for a variety of cusion parameters. Representative photographs taken at different times are presented. The results indicate that there was absolutely no erosion of soil when the soil moisture content was up to 67%, but some cracks developed in the top 25 mm of soil. In the case of the flooded condition, there was erosion but its extent was not so severe, thus indicating further the suitability of using air cushion vehicles in wetland paddy fields.
