Abstract The German Microgravity Research Program covers research on physical and chemical processes involving fluid phases and on property changes of matter exposed to space conditions. The scientific goals and main topics of the program are outlined and the long-range planning is discussed. The present program takes into account the unification of the two German states with their scientific potential as well as the strong international cooperation in space research. The activity is based on a Scientific Program, a Flight Program and Program Supporting Measures. Starting from some key results obtained earlier within the program the future guidelines for experimental and theoretical research are motivated.
