Abstract The properties of the counter-electrojet (CEJ) are reviewed together with some of the theories proposed to explain these. It appears that most of the properties can be explained by an additional current system driven by a solar or lunar semidiurnal tide. The frequent disappearance of the reversed current just outside the electrojet can be simulated by the antisymmetric (2,3) solar or lunar tidal mode. These may also produce currents in different directions at different heights which have been inferred during a partial CEJ jet in order to explain Esq disappearance. Possible relations of the CEJ to the lower atmosphere and the way the CEJ develops are also discussed.
