Abstract Knowledge of the interactions of climate, soil condition, and vegetation is necessary in order to understand and quantify the role of hydrology in global processes. State variables such as soil moisture play an important role in determining land surface moisture and energy fluxes and in partitioning precipitation into runoff and storage terms. To provide accurate descriptions of hydrological components that are relevant at local to regional scales, the integrating properties of remote sensing are utilized, especially at the microwave wavelengths most sensitive to water content. Preliminary results of four ongoing investigations designed to study land surface hydrologic-atmospheric interactions in humid and semiarid watersheds will be discussed. These studies have focused on the use of active and passive microwave sensors to estimate the spatial and temporal distribution of soil moisture at the catchment scale, and the eventual use of this information in the analysis and prediction of the associated hydrological processes.
