Abstract Recent theory and observation indicate that the inner magnetosphere, from about 6 to 15 RE, plays a crucial role in the substorm process. New observations of the inner portion of this region by the Combined Release and Radiation Effects Satellite (CRRES) provide the opportunity to examine the inner magnetosphere manifestations of the substorm acceleration region. CRRES is in an eccentric, geosynchronous transfer orbit with a 6.3 RE apogee and an 18° inclination that extends its location at times to L = 8. Local magnetic field reconfigurations at CRRES have been used to detect numerous substorm expansion onsets on the nightside from December 1990 to about April 1991. In this paper, we present CRRES observations of substorms that illustrate the highly stressed magnetic field observed inside of geostationary orbit, the relationship between auroral kilometric radiation and magnetic reconfigurations, and injection related ion composition variations.
