Abstract The experimentally produced flight of one pigeon elicits alarmed flight in conspecifics, provided that the first bird's take-off is not preceded by preflight movements that predict its occurrence. Therefore, the ‘meaning’ of the take-off as an alarm signal depends on its behavioural context.
