Abstract Heating rate is crucial to the pyrolysis process of charring materials in the thermal protection system (TPS) of spacecraft. In order to study the influence of heating rate on the thermal response of charring materials, a novel formula for pyrolysis rate of charring materials is presented on the basis of experimental results of charring materials under different heating rates and the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. Then combined with the pyrolysis layer model, from the numerical simulation we find an interesting result that the traditional method to determine pyrolysis rate without considering the heating rate is conservative for the design of TPS, but the novel method in this study contributes to optimization design of TPS in spacecraft.
Highlights Novel formula for pyrolysis rate under different heating rates is given. Presented formula is combined with the pyrolysis layer model. Charring materials encounter a more severe pyrolysis process as heating rate rises. Bondline temperature of thermal protection system decreases as heating rate rises.
