AbstractAs on Earth, the realization of the promises of space rely largely on the availability of abundant - relatively low cost energy. Major NASA programs are developing the technologies to meet the future power and energy needs for space. This paper discusses the relevant space power technologies, their status, and the thrusts of the NASA Space Power Technology Program.Significant progress has been achieved in static power systems technology. Photovoltaic cell technologies from silicon to III-V devices have made incredible advances. Concentrator arrays with low cost potential and ultralightweight arrays one-half the specific mass of the lightest flown to date will be presented. Major advances in the state of development of LEO-durable nickel-hydrogen batteries and in high capacity, long life bipolar nickel-hydrogen batteries enable an emerging range of missions.After a decade and a half of neglect, dynamic power systems are again receiving emphasis. The critical technical barriers to the use of solar dynamic systems in LEO will be discussed and progress in developing durable, efficient 25 kW free piston Stirling engines will be detailed. Corollary developments in advanced radiator technology will be outlined where progress in liquid drop and liquid belt radiators will be presented.The technology that links static and dynamic systems is the power management and distribution system. As power levels move to the multihundred kilowatt range, increases in voltage are mandatory. The view that the power systems must be treated as a user-friendly utility will be presented and supported by technical reference to a 20 kHz power distribution system.Additionally, the critical role played by the near-space environment and its interactions with power systems will be described and advances in materials technologies pertinent to space power system survivability will be described.
