Abstract The predictions of the different theories proposed for explaining the auroral planetary radio emissions are compared with the observations. The most developed theory is certainly the cyclotron maser instability. Recent advances in its use for the quantitative determination of the flux of the emissions are reviewed. The case of the Earth radio emission and, in particular, the observations of the Viking spacecraft inside the source regions of the AKR, are presented in more detail. These observations have allowed an accurate determination of the physical conditions in the generation region. The consequences on the cyclotron maser instability are discussed.
