Abstract Within a cloud of dust particles the dust charges and dust cloud electric potential will vary with the dust density leading to a collective electric force which can influence strongly on the cloud structure and dynamics. We discuss the effect on the vertical structure of planetary dust rings and show that this can also produce vertical oscillations in the density distribution which may be in resonance with other magnetospheric phenomena. We briefly describe a new flux-tube interchange instability due to dust. We show that a collisionless braking of dust in a ring electric field will act and that it can lead to capture of dust at the ring edges and damping of internal dust motion. Collective effects may also be important in other situations and we demonstrate this to be the case for dust levitated in the electric sheath above solid surfaces.
