Abstract Hourly monthly median values of the F2-layer critical frequency, foF2, measured at some European stations over one solar cycle at least, are fitted to the linear regression model foF2=aR+b. The coefficients a and b are determined for constant cosχ values for each month in each station. The results show that the most responsible for the winter-summer anomaly is the coefficient a, although b has before mid-day a smaller value in summer than in winter. On the contrary, from about mid-day up to sunrise b is greater in summer than in winter, so that it shows a diurnal anomaly. These anomalies seem to be related to corresponding variations of the composition of the neutral atmosphere at ionospheric heights.
