AbstractUtilization of a data-relay satellite (DRS) to obtain range and range-rate measurements of a low Earth-orbiting satellite presents obvious visibility advantages compared to Ground stations. A feasibility study of the orbital estimation of a low-orbiting satellite by means of a Kalman filtering algorithm using DRS measurements has been performed, leading to positive conclusions. The estimation of a launcher ascent trajectory has been also investigated, but no definite conclusions could be stated to date.
