Abstract The SOHO mission is designed to study the solar interior, the physical phenomena that lead to the formation of the solar corona and the solar wind, and make in situ measurements of the solar wind. The spacecraft and the helioseismology instruments are discussed in a companion paper in this section by Domingo and Poland. In this paper we describe the instruments designed to study the solar atmosphere from the chromosphere through the corona, and the solar wind. The selected remote sensing instruments will study the motions and plasma properties of the corona and below, while the particles instruments will give information on the solar wind particle composition and energy characteristics.
