Abstract The interaction of the solar wind plasma with the pickup ions of interstellar origin is reanalysed on the basis of the quasilinear theory. It is pointed out that at larger distances from the Sun (r>10 AU), where the self generated MHD turbulence starts to dominate over turbulence convected outwards from the corona, the primary solar wind may be heated by the secondary ion population. It is shown that for finite heating efficiencies, solar wind temperature minima should occur somewhere between 20 and 100 AU.
