Abstract Relatively narrow band emissions with frequencies around 15 kHz are observed upstream of the Martian bow shock and are similar to the electron plasma oscillations identified in other planetary environments; they are electrostatic in nature and confined to the electron foreshock. Broadband emissions are detected in the ion foreshock and/or shock foot. The wave activity at the shock is strongly influenced by the outflow of ionospheric particles and atmospheric neutrals which escape from the planetary environment. Plasma clouds with densities of the order of 10–100 cm−3 and associated wave emissions are a permanent feature of the Martian planetotail.
