Abstract The wealth of observational material provided by the COS-B and SAS-2 telescopes has provided a great incentive to develop new and better techniques for high energy gamma-ray astronomy. The prospects of achieving a greater sensitivity and a much improved angular resolution in future gamma-ray telescopes are reviewed in the light of the predicted performance of payloads already approved and new techniques being developed in the laboratory.
