Abstract The influence of the chaotic scattering on the formation of the stationary ion distribution in the Earth's magnetotail is studied using a model, which includes variations of the magnetotail field in the sun-Earth direction. It is shown, how the chaotic scattering permanently redistributes ions between the CPS (=central plasma sheet) and the PSBL (=plasma sheet boundary layer) of the tail. Both regions are, therefore, of the same origin. Our study predicts a nonsymmetrical hole in the CPS ion velocity space distribution function.
