AbstractPlanetary sciences use terminology that has some inconsistencies and does not correspond to the present knowledge about Solar System bodies. The paper discusses the possibility of a classification based on properties of celestial bodies rather than on their orbits. Physical criteria for discrimination between different groups of bodies are proposed. The obtained classification has some advantages especially for geology and geophysics of celestial bodies.
