Abstract From an updating of several new developments in the study of gas-plasma interaction at Io and in the Io plasma torus, we make a number of speculative conjectures. These include (a) that the “energy crisis” in the hot Io plasma torus may be partially resolved by a local energy generation mechanism such as the magnetic pumping process, (b) that the Jovian ring could act as an additional plasma source in injecting cold plasma component into the inner plasma torus, and finally (c) that the formation of an ion wake may permit a much more extended electromagnetic coupling between Io and the Jovian ionosphere.
