AbstractAdvances in mesosphere/lower thermosphere (MLT) tidal studies have stimulated advances in both observational and theoretical aspects of the tides above 100 km. In particular, the derivation of MLT tidal climatologies has enabled the development of a technique to represent upward propagating tides in global thermospheric models. The mesospheric tidal climatologies resulted from coordinated multi-station, multi-instrument observational campaigns which have now been extended to thermospheric heights. The importance of global simultaneous data in investigations of atmospheric wave systems can not be overstated. Recent theoretical investigations of the thermospheric response to geomagnetic disturbances indicate that the response depends strongly on the relative phasing of the auroral sources of energy and momentum and the tidal waves propagating into the thermosphere from below. The incorporation of sources dependent on geomagnetic activity in the numerical models significantly alters the latitudinal structure of the simulated diurnal and semidiurnal exospheric temperatures.
