Abstract This paper compares four routing strategies according to their ability to consolidate material. Two measures of consolidation are used: the number of transportation links and the number of terminals. Decreasing the number of links and number of terminals leads to increased consolidation and reduced operating and shipping costs. The effectiveness of each routing strategy depends on the number of origins and destinations, as well as the flow of material and distance between origins and destinations. The best application for each strategy is discussed.
