AbstractThe transition of U.S. space launch activities from the expendable launch vehicles to the Space Transportation System (STS) (Shuttle) has led to extensive new developments in upper stages. Additional new developments can be expected as Space Station availability provides a different context for stage operations. It is expected that upper stages will become reusable and spacebased. For some applications, both three burn strategies and aerobraking configurations are more attractive than all propulsive systems. The development and demonstration of storable propellant transfer systems has been accomplished, and experimental facilities for determining handling techniques for cryogens are underway.
