Abstract Presently, IR (Infra-Red) detectors are best suitable for spaceborne remote sensing satellites. The IR detectors can be operated at cryogenic temperatures to extract the low-level signal from the background noise. The IR detectors are cooled and controlled at cryogenic temperatures using active cryocoolers. These cryocoolers employed in spaceborne remote sensing satellites generally operate on closed-loop Stirling Cycle. Different variants of these cryocoolers employing linear/rotary motors and Stirling/Pulse Tube cryocoolers have been widely employed in several missions by NASA, ESA, and JAXA. The cryocooler control electronics (CCE) is responsible for providing the drive signal to control the cold-tip temperature keeping vibration exports within desired limits. There is ample literature on control algorithms that help to understand how to control the cold-tip temperature of the cryocooler. Also, various active and passive techniques have been used to reduce the vibration export from the cryocooler. This review paper summarizes different techniques and control algorithms employed in CCE for spaceborne linear cryocoolers. The paper also includes the recent trends practiced in active vibration control to reduce the vibrations of linear cryocoolers used for Onboard and Ground Applications. The control algorithms attract core area of discussion whereas the performance of several techniques has been analyzed with a thoughtful conclusion.
