Abstract Thematic Mapper (TM) data expressed as band ratios were used to investigate soils of the Palouse formation in eastern Washington State, U.S.A. Ratioed data were clustered and plotted to reveal relationships between soil and green vegetation. Plots of TM 5/4 against 3/4 showed a triangular distribution of data clusters. One point of the triangle was located near the origin of the plot. It was formed by clusters of data from green plants. A line of clusters from bare soil made up the side opposite the origin point of the triangle. The adjacent sides represented the upper and lower bounds of soil organic carbon content. Distribution of data along the soil line was related to the amount of organic carbon in the soil.
