Abstract The decomposition of immiscible metallic alloys into a dispersion of liquid droplets in a liquid matrix and its spatial development is considered with reference to selected experiments performed in experiment facilities under microgravity conditions. The analysis and discussion of these experiments reveal, that research in space laboratories is and will be able to clarify the mechanisms involved in the transformation of a one phase liquid into a two phase liquid. On earth many details of the different processes contributing to the decomposition are generally not observable due to the overriding effects gravity induced convections play. The various experiments so far performed in space laboratories show, that there is a need to improve our current theories for the different steps of the demixing process, to include hydrodynamic effects and droplet motions, which can have various origins, and have real importance in determining the final microstructure of the two phase alloy.
