AbstractRadiative cooling rates as a measure of radiant energy loss are an important component of the atmosphere's driving mechanism. Despite their significant role only a few attempts have been made so far to derive atmospheric cooling rate profiles from space. This paper outlines an approach for the determination of CO2 cooling rates using satellite spectral radiance measurements for temperature retrievals. Based on regression techniques for temperature retrievals atmospheric cooling rate profiles due to CO2 are derived with a modern parameterization scheme.
