Abstract It is shown that the surprisingly high degree of axisymmetry of the Saturnian magnetic field found by the Voyager measurements does not conflict with the assumption that this field is due to a dynamo operating in the interior of the planet. Several possibilities of suitable dynamo models are discussed. In particular, a model is proposed which allows a magnetic field external to the planet whose dipole, quadrupole and octupole contributions are completely axisymmetric whereas higher order multipoles deviate from this symmetry.
