AbstractThe convective transport of perturbations of the neutral gas composition from high to middle latitudes is investigated using a simple two-dimensional model. It is found that the degree of expansion critically depends on the latitudinal distribution of the polar heat source. For a narrow heat source with its smaller equatorward directed winds, the disturbance spreads only about 10°. For a wider heating region, which includes polar cap heating, the disturbance zone extends to much lower latitudes.
