Abstract Solar and interplanetary observations related to the SC event of 6 June 1979 are presented. This event was caused by the arrival at the Earth of a shock structure in the solar wind which, when tracked by means of IPS, appeared to originate in a region on the Sun containing a near-equatorial coronal hole. The solar observations showed that a change in the size of that hole took place about the 4th of June. We argue that this lends support to the idea that interplanetary shocks originate in changing coronal holes, and a possible scenario and a mechanism for this are proposed.
