AbstractAll winged space transportation system developments are depending on reliable information on aerodynamic design characteristics, e.g. wind tunnel test data transferability. Especially man-rated systems require high reliability and safety standards. Therefore, it is usual since the very beginning of space transporter development to perform free flight tests with more or less scaled down testing vehicles in order to reduce the application risk of the manned transporter. Joint activities of MBB and AMD-BA in terms of the HERMES demonstrator MAIA lead to a general justification review and to a technical approach which will be presented in detail to CNES/ESA in November.
