AbstractBecause of the interference with the spacecraft, especially particle experiments have to be performed on cable booms. Also for other extravehicular activities telescopic arms, bar linkages and tethers are used. The objective of this paper is to describe a method of controlling and manoeuvring short-tethered systems. For this problem, bending wave effects in the tether will be used. The legendary “Indian Rope Trick” is probably based on the same principle. In order to manoeuvre a subsatellite relative to the main satellite mechanical waves in the connecting tether will be used. As a bending wave transports both forces and torques this type of wave will be preferred to string waves. Three wave phenomena are of interest: Radiation force, circular polarized waves and asymmetric wave forms. With these effects the tether-connected subsatellite can be moved in all three directions and turned with respect to all three axes. The energy consumption is low. Using Coriolis forces and the gravity gradient, this method can be extended also for long-tether missions. This technique seems not only suitable for positioning and station keeping up to several kilometers, but also as a mean for docking of two satellites, as a space crane or a manipulator for extravehicular activities or as a manoeuvring system for cable connected astronauts in free space.
