AbstractBy virtue of their global coverage, versatile instrumentation, and commitment to long-term observations, the polar orbiting operational meteorological satellites can play a major role in the observing system required for the global change research program. Research and development activities to extract climatically significant variables from the satellite radiance observations during real-time processing are reviewed. These include efforts to improve exiting global products, such as sea surface temperature, vegetation index, planetary radiation budget, snow cover and sea ice, atmospheric soundings, and ozone, as well as development of new products, including cloud amount and height, precipitation, atmospheric aerosols, and surface radiation budget. Particular emphasis is placed on the science behind these remote sensing R&D activities and the results being obtained.
