High-speed ground transportation system under study at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is described; system utilizes fluid supported vehicle, propelled through tube by novel means of propulsion; in comparing tube transportation with short-haul air transportation, one of prime advantages of air is inherent flexibility due to its freedom from fixed route right-of-way, while major advantage of tube system is its ability to penetrate directly to heart of urban areas at air-transport speeds; two systems may be competitive in densely developed corridors where large traffic movements exist between adjacent cities.
