Tethering system in which self-propelled body is interconnected to towing vehicle by cable is examined; cable is used to transmit propulsion power to submerged body and to transmit control and data signals between two vehicles; calculations are presented for cable profiles and operating conditions for which profile pressure drag is negligible compared to friction drag; results offer rapid determination of optimum cable configuration for all operating conditions that satisfy assumptions used in determining cable loading functions; for optimum configuration of heavy cables, submerged body is located forward of surface vessel.
