Man-in-the-Sea phase of U S Navy's Deep Submergence Systems Project is designed to develop technology and equipment necessary to allow man to work and live on ocean floor; technique of saturation diving is described and decompression formula given; experiments carried out to date, in particular, Genesis I, Sealab I and II; habitat for Sealab II was specially built chamber 57 1/2 ft long and 12 ft in diam; habitat's atmosphere consisted of gas mixture of 77 to 79% helium, 18% nitrogen, and 3.5 to 5% oxygen; problem areas and development of propulsion devices for underwater swimmers (wet-diver propulsion unit, dry-hull small submarine, and tractor-type bottom-crawling device).
