Installation on Glover (AGDE-1), which replaces conventional propeller and is part of U S Navy program to reduce underwater noise radiated from combatant ships; design includes five-bladed rotor, 11 ft 7 in. diam, seven-bladed stator aft of rotor, and shroud 16 ft long and 13 ft maximum diam with canted inlet; two struts connect shroud to hull of ship; material is modified (addition of 0.5% tin) Superston 40, manganese-nickel-aluminum bronze alloy; metallurgical aspects of alloy, including difficulties found in welding, are also described.
