Services referred to are primarily those developed by railway administrations to utilize in full advantages of rail transport, sea routes being planned so that connecting rail services are available from berths at one, or both, ends of passage; routes are between Great Britain, Continent, Ireland and Channel Islands; variety of routes and characteristics of traffic lead, in some instances, to employment of general purpose ships, capable of dealing with passengers, freight, livestock and also automobiles; aim of paper is to direct attention to experience already gained in this connection by railway shipping services in their specialized field, and to suggest pointers for future.
