For enabling tests to be carried out to ascertain what economies could be secured by use of oil as fuel it was decided to rebuild one of existing 0-6-0 freight switching engines with heavy-oil engine as prime mover and transmission gear of hydraulic type; engine supplied by Davey, Paxman and Co is of 6-cyl 4-stroke, solid-injection type; transmission gear supplied by Haslam and Newton.
