Report of Volatility Group of Motor Vehicle Fuel, Lubricant and Research Committee describes test technique developed that permits evaluation of passenger car hot start and run characteristics at various severity levels with minimum of instrumentation; most critical of several test conditions investigated in five cars at 95 F ambient were 20-mi warmup at 70 mph followed by 20-min engine-off soak period; hot start and run are defined as engine start followed by idle period of at least 1 min; technique gives satisfactory results when using adjusted Reed vapor pressure for two stalls or for 4 sec start.
