History of electric car evolution and reasons for design of experimental city car, conceived by Ford British Research, are reviewed; chassis, body, and electric power train designs and constructional features; Comuta is powered by two series wound d-c motors, manufactured by C.A.V., Ltd, each motor driving one rear wheel; characteristics of d-c motor are very suitable for electric car, having high torque values at starting and in low speed range; system protection; next to further developing electrical system, most important requirement is weight saving to increase driving range; design studies are in progress to reduce overall vehicle weight.
