High noise levels within railroad cabooses make radio communication difficult, endanger hearing, and generally degrade working conditions for crew; methods used to reduce noise levels in railroad caboose from Speech Interference Level (SIL) of 82.5 db to SIL of 68.6 db; noise spectrum finally achieved compares favorably with noise in first-class cabin of large commercial jet airliner; method of analyzing caboose is presented; relative importance of vibration isolation, structural damping, and acoustic absorption as noise reduction measures are discussed.
