To determine deleterious effects of engine exhaust impingement, Boeing Co conducted program to determine ground surface environment or conditions which result from engines or devices used to provide lift during vertical mode of flight; tests of natural ground surface materials such as sand, gravel, and sod; evaluation of synthetic materials used to cover ground during VTOL; it is found that with lift fan or ejector nozzle, suitable materials are sod, light weight membrane, or asphalt; other results.
