Progress of solid propellant technology appears to have been retarded by lack of development in fundamental field of combustion of turbulent pre-mixed, fuel-rich flames; roles of radiative heat transfer and physical disintegrative mode of surface dissipation are proposed for consideration; recommendations for future research.
