Motions of propeller shaft system are not entirely independent; if longitudinal frequency is twice that of lowest torsional mode coupling is weak, and, except in unusual cases, longitudinal frequencies can be calculated as if there were no torsional restraint from shaft system, and torsional frequencies as if system were infinitely rigid in longitudinal motion; empirical formulas are recommended.
