Method is based on correlation between road performance of gasoline and its laboratory octane ratings plus chemical analysis; empirical correlations between road octane number and laboratory inspection data show that best predictions of road performance can be made from research, motor octane numbers and hydrocarbon composition; throughout speed range, motor octane number is most important fuel factor.
