If greater retarding effect possible with mechanically operated four-wheel brakes is to be fully realized, it is necessary to increase pedal pressure, increasing brake leverage and pedal movement, or increase of self-energizing effect; vacuum-type brake is amplifier which provides power to supplement muscular strength; capacity of various Westinghouse vacuum brake units; discussion includes comparison of brake-pedal force required for two-wheel and for four-wheel brakes.
