Principal factors entering into production of shocks in long trains by applications of brakes are: amount of and rate of developing braking force at head end of train, amount of brake application, brake-pipe leakage and piston travel; throttle manipulation; track condition, as to grade and curvature; speed; free slack between cars; type and condition of draft gear and attachments.
