Today there are more than 30 units operating in United States and 14 Diesel rail cars in Canada; Diesel engine divided into several major groups depending on characteristics of design; majority in railroad service are equipped with electric drive, constant effort to devise other means of harnessing Diesel power and adapting it to traction purposes; Diesel locomotive is inherently expensive in first cost.
