Tests have shown that acoustic transponders can be placed on ocean floor in great depths and acoustically ingerrogated by surface ships at ranges up to 15 mi; other work shows that system can be built to use convergence zone propagation paths, permitting greater ranges; work done on projects MARS (Mobile Atlantic Range Station) and STAR (Ship Tended Acoustic Relay) is indicated; table shows MARS and STAR transponder characteristics; diagrams show components and four transponder navigation area geometry; survey method is outlined, and use for oceanographic surveys, submarine navigation, minesweeping, etc, cited.
