Caldrill I, to be put into service by Caldrill Offshore Inc, California, is converted self-propelled, twin screw, diesel powered A KL type Navy vessel 176 ft long with 33 ft beam and 10 ft loaded draft; automatic positioning equipment, referred to as "Ape", will enable vessel to hold its position over hole in any depth of water without use of anchors; basically, "Ape" system consists of 4300-hp electric powered Murray and Tregurtha Harbormaster units each driven through Baylor eddy-current coupling; 2 General Motors Cleveland diesel propulsion engines, each developing 500 bhp, will be used for driving two 350 kw d-c generators while drilling.
